24 Corvettes and 44 members caravaned together from Minocqua to the Naniboujou Lodge 18 miles northeast of Grand Marais, MN. near the Canadian border.
The Naniboujou Lodge was built in 1929 as a private hunting lodge. Among the developers were Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Ring Lardner, a New York newspaper man and Charles F. Kelly, a prominent Duluth merchant. The lodge consists of 24 rooms and is graced with the largest natural stone fireplace in the State of Minnesota. The 30 x 80 foot dining room was painted by French artist, Antoine Goufee, in a Cree Indian design that has never been repainted.
The Naniboujou Lodge is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places..
In 1939, the Arthur Roberts Hotel Chain took over and operated it until 1953 when Arthur Roberts died. It was purchased by a local couple, Mr. & Mrs. Francis C. Hussey. They operated it as a summer resort and motel. In 1963, ownership passed to Luther & Suzie Wallace who operated the lodge until 1980, when the sold it to the Campus Church, a non-denominational Christian church located on the University of Minnesota campus. That brought Tim & Nancy Ramey as managers.
Five years later, the church decided to sell and Ramey's became the owners. They have continued to restore and operate the lodge with the help of their children and grandchildren.
